Results and report
This year’s Mtunzini Bush Challenge once again drew the crowds as the event grows from strength to strength. As many as 550 main race entrants and 180 fun run entrants turned up to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and all that the little village offers. The 10km and 16km route enchanted and enticed runners and walkers through beautiful cool forest trails, through mangrove swamps, over sand dunes, and onto the pristine beach. This year’s route also included a part of the Zini River Estate, thus introducing participants to the diverse nature of our village and the serene living of the Estate. The 5km fun run, enjoyed by both children and adults, took participants through parts of the golf course and indigenous forest. All 10km entrants were awarded the original Bush Run medal, and the 16km entrants received the highly coveted Mtunzini Bush Challenge t-shirt. The day ended with the usual prize-giving and fantastic enviable spot prizes.
Besides offering this delightful experience to many athletes around the country, this event benefits the local community. This includes donations to underprivileged schools, as well as our local Umlalazi Nature Reserve, the Guardian Angels, and the local Mtunzini Primary School. Our race is now recognised as being one of the ‘must do’ races on the race calendar thanks to the organising committee’s superb organisation and hard work. Many have rated it an exceptional event, insisting they will be back again next year.
